THE PATH DETERMINES THE PACE

Sometime last week, I went to visit some of my friends at their work place, and on my way out I had to descend  a particular staircase to  reach the door of the building. As I was going, a lady who was a security/ patrol officer coming from a different direction also wanted to descend the stairs, either consciously or subconsciously, each of us wanted to reach the stairs first and we did. So both of us found ourselves moving at somewhat hurried pace which was quite unnecessary if you ask me.  At that moment, something significant dropped in my mind and that’s exactly what I would like to share with you all.

So I was headed to my quarters which was about fifteen minutes from the stairwell, and she was headed  to the door post which was about 2 minutes from the staircase. Whether or not I climbed the staircase in a hurry , she would have gotten to her destination before I did mine. Actually, if i continued at that pace to reach my quarters, i would have been exhausted along the way.

Now that is exactly how life is, our current realities and situation is a perfect lookalike, we all are headed in varying directions along different paths, or same paths different destination, so how unwise is it for us to run at the same pace with others whose destination we know not?
Do you put a car on a full gear on a rough road or overtake at a highspeed on a crowded route?

We sometimes get sad, angry and jealous that some of our friends seem ahead of us, then we start to chase after them, struggling so hard to keep up with something that was never our thing or path to tread.
Take for example, your satisfaction will come if you attain your greatest level of achievement which is obtaining a masters degree, while for your friend that greatest achievement will be becoming a professor, so will it be totally understandable if you friend starts publishing journals as early as now while you chill and live life comfortably.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not telling you to become laid back,or have no drive, or ambition in life, rather i am encouraging you to be more proactive, more disciplined, more kind to yourself, i am telling you to have more faith in yourself and your dreams, i am telling you to trust your passion enough to develop it. I am saying working at a pace based on someone else' path is one of the dumbest decision you can make.

A quick advice here, set a goal for yourself, write out the things you want to achieve, and trust God to help you, then work towards achieving it. So that if your goal is to be a poet, you don’t get envious or jealous that your friend is doing extraordinarily in drama and then feel the urge to dive into it. And vice versa, if your goal is to be a marriage counselor you don't dive into something totally unrelated because someone else is doing fine there. Maintain your path and find the most suitable pace for you.

Be the best you can be by being true to yourself.

And rememeber, a great week begins with a great Monday or an awesome Sunday.

O’kanye
